Mission Viejo Intensive Outpatient Rehab

Call 24/7 to Learn About IOP in Orange County

Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP) is a primary treatment program that can be recommended following a clinical and medical assessment. Our Mission Viejo IOP is typically recommended for individuals who do not require therapeutically regulated detox.  Because intensive outpatient rehabs are intended to be flexible so that individuals can still fulfil work and family life obligations, IOP is generally only recommended to those who our clinical and medical staff see as fit to achieve success with the least likelihood of relapse.

What is the Difference Between Intensive Outpatient Rehab (IOP) and Outpatient Rehab?

Intensive outpatient programs provide a more intense, rigorous structure than standard outpatient programs but are less intense and demanding than inpatient rehabs. Treatment schedules, then, vary depending on the patient’s needs and progress but typically follow a structured schedule during the day or evenings. In most cases, an IOP program requires about 3 hours of treatment three to five days per week.

What Does an IOP Entail?

Every IOP will differ slightly, but most intensive outpatient programs will combine evidence-based therapies and other services such as the following:

  • Personalized treatment planning
  • Individual counseling
  • Group counseling
  • Behavioral therapies
  • Case management
  • Medications/medical help
  • 24-hour crisis services
  • Family services
  • Alcohol and drug testing & monitoring
  • Peer services
  • Transportation
  • Wellness programs
  • Vocational services
  • Educational services
  • Dual diagnosis treatment

What is an intensive outpatient program (IOP)?

IOP stands for intensive outpatient program. It is a structured level of addiction treatment that sits between residential inpatient rehab and standard outpatient care. Clients live at home or in sober living and come to treatment for several hours a day, several days a week. In most cases, an IOP involves about 3 hours of treatment three to five days per week, scheduled during the day or in the evening.

Because you go home after each session, IOP lets you keep up with work, school and family responsibilities while still getting far more support than a weekly counseling appointment.

Who is IOP right for?

Our clinical and medical team recommends IOP after an assessment. It is often a good fit if you:

  • Are stepping down after medical detox or inpatient rehab and want continued structure
  • Do not need medically supervised detox or 24-hour care
  • Have a stable, supportive place to live, such as home or a sober living residence
  • Need to keep working, studying or caring for family during treatment

If you need a higher level of support, we will recommend inpatient care first and build IOP into your plan for later.

What happens in our Orange County IOP

Every IOP plan is personalized, but most clients take part in:

  • Individual counseling with a dedicated therapist
  • Group therapy and process groups
  • Relapse prevention and coping skills
  • Family involvement and education
  • Alcohol and drug testing and monitoring
  • Dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Support through 12-Step and SMART Recovery programs
